I would describe Armenians as “religious.” Armenians have focused on religion more than anything. The majority of our art and architecture were created for a religious purpose. Our morals and customs have been drawn from the Christian faith. Our national identity as Christians dates back to 301 AD, when Armenia became the first nation to recognize Christianity as its state religion.

The word I would use to describe Armenians is “survivors.” Historically, other countries have ruled Armenians, some of which no longer exist. But Armenia exists and Armenians survived the Genocide of 1915. Armenians survived the Karabakh War. Armenians survived and will survive in foreign countries. We are survivors.

Armenians are “khohem” or “wise.” Many nations have tried to stamp out our people but have been unsuccessful. Armenians in general were rather successful under the Ottoman Empire despite being persecuted for being Christians, and being forced to pay the “dhimma” tax. Armenians have flourished even in distant lands, such as Canada, China, Sweden, and the United States, far away from our “Yerkir Avetyats.” Jesus said be “wise as serpents, and innocent as doves.”

The one word I describe Armenians as would be “tenacious.” Tenacious, because we have achieved so much, with what little we have. We always aim for bigger and better and never settle for the average. Just look at how much we have accomplished since the Genocide.

I would describe Armenians as “resilient.” Resilient, because Armenians have frequently been persecuted and oppressed, but we are still here and are doing really well.
