“The 50th anniversary of the Armenian Students Organization is a significant milestone,” said Prof. Barlow Der Mugrdechian. “We are recognizing the efforts and dedication of hundreds of members who have served in the organization over the last fifty years.”
On Saturday, May 4, 2024, the Armenian Students Organization (ASO) celebrated its 50th anniversary at the Holy Trinity Armenian Church Social Hall. Students, alumni, friends, and family gathered to celebrate the ASO’s successful history of bringing together the Armenian youth at Fresno State and advocating for Armenian causes. Established in 1974, the ASO continues to celebrate the rich Armenian culture while fostering unity in the Armenian community.
The atmosphere was lively as community members made their way into the Social Hall. ASO alumni were able to take a trip down memory lane as they viewed a slideshow of pictures from past years of the organization – photos of parents, aunts, uncles, and relatives enjoying their time in the ASO. There was a great nostalgia and excitement in the air that each guest felt and shared.
At the entrance was a display of all the executive board members of the ASO from 1974 to the present year, totaling over 300 members! A guest book was provided for attendees to share their meaningful memories from their time in the ASO. Many guests expressed their appreciation for the organization and how they cherished the time spent with the Armenian community on campus.
Apart from the delicious mezze, kebab dinner, and abundant dessert, the event was complete with live music from the Andrew Hagopian band, a DJ, and a photo booth. As guests enjoyed a delicious meal, ASO President Alec Karayan gave a heartfelt speech about the organization’s impact and invited executive board members on stage to dedicate an award to Prof. Der Mugrdechian, Beberian Coordinator of Armenian Studies. Prof. Der Mugrdechian has committed a great deal of his time and efforts as an advisor to the ASO and has made invaluable contributions to the Armenian community at the local, national, and international level.
“Students who have participated in the ASO have gone on to become an integral part of the Armenian community,” said Prof. Der Mugrdechian. “They have become the leaders of many of the community organizations.”
After remarks from Prof. Der Mugrdechian, guests were invited to the dance floor. From traditional Harout Pamboukjian songs to modern artists like Suro, the music of the evening truly reflected the decades of success and evolution experienced by the ASO.
Earlier that day, ASO members were hard at work setting up the venue and preparing for the evening festivities. Several students and alumni also graciously volunteered to help during the event and stayed behind to clean up. Their efforts are greatly appreciated and are a prime example of the dedication among the Armenian youth. Their genuine involvement in the organization is a testament to the bright future of the ASO!
“Despite our individual backgrounds and experiences, we were bound by a shared heritage and a collective vision for our organization and community as a whole,” said former executive board member Ariana Garabedian.
ASO board members prepared mementos for guests to take home, including limited edition 50th anniversary stickers and ceramic coasters. As guests began to depart from the venue, many ASO members stayed behind to clean up. With the music still playing, they continued to dance while tidying up, reflecting their cheerful service! ASO board members spent a great deal of time and effort in preparation for the event and are grateful for all those who were in attendance and the support from donors, students, and alumni.
“Armenian history and identity are alive and well at Fresno State, with over 75 active members this year,” said ASO President Alec Karayan. “My prayer is that God blesses ASO for another 50 years and that we can continue to do what we love most.”
