Armenian Studies Program Coordinator Barlow Der Mugrdechian announced the establishment of the Peter Mourad Hagopian Memorial Scholarship Fund in the Armenian Studies Program at Fresno State.

Hagopian’s brother, Edward, who will be 93 in December, established the Hagopian Scholarship in memory of his late brother. The scholarships will be awarded to students enrolled in Armenian and Armenian Studies courses at Fresno State.

Peter Mourad Hagopian was born in Whitinsville, Massachusetts, in 1925, and passed away in California in 2014. The Hagopian family moved to Detroit before World War II. Peter Hagopian served for four years in the United State Navy in WWII, based mostly in the Pacific. In 1947 Hagopian moved to Fresno, where he became a custom tile contractor, donating many hours of work to the California Armenian Home.

Hagopian’s parents, Bedros Hagopian and Anahid (Chimanian) Hagopian, were natives of the village of Govdun, near Sepastia. Mourad of Sepastia was also a native of Govdun and a family friend.

Peter Hagopian is survived by his three children: Cheryl, Melanie, and Valerie.
